Berserkers and Bolos
Check out the "Berserker" stories (mostly short stories, some novels) by Fred Saberhagen, and the "Bolo" stories by Keith Laumer. Both have a common theme (in the one case, alien unstoppable self-aware war machines, in the other... well... not-so-alien unstoppable self-aware war machines) but the structure of the stories is much as you describe. They happen at different times and places, with characters and settings almost always different, but always featuring the one thematic element. It works for short stories, and short story collections, but you couldn't call the anthology its own story.Berzerkers
Thank you for reminding about Saberhagen. It's been a long time since I've thought of the berzerkers. One of my fave stories from one of his collections was "auto da fe". A rather brilliant take on killing machine versus man combat and also a return to a more gladitorial culture. The idea he came up with has certainly been grabbed by many a sci-fi writer and, of course, the original BSG probably owes a lot to his series. Especially the ones where the humans are actually captured by the machines and kept alive for study.
Thanks for the comment.
