Tattoo--The Next Nightmare

I have heard from other writers that sometimes magic happens. So I know I'm not the only to have experienced this. "Tattoo", being released in September, is one of those stories. After I wrote and produced "Canvas" (next week's tale), one of my listeners told me a story over Twitter that gave me an idea for a Fiend. However, when I tried to tell the original story I had in mind, it didn't go anywhere. So I wrote and rewrote the same 1k words over and over again, and every time, it got worse. I finally threw it away completely and started with a clean slate. Rather than attempting to make the visceral side of the tale the focus, I went back and started from a different angle. What happened was a crazed caffeine, alcohol induced marathon that occurred over 7 days. About 22k words in that space of time, several thousand of which are in data heaven due to their lack of importance to the story. The story took off like a rocket. I really enjoyed the moments I spent researching different aspects of scars and tattoos and medical procedures. Every time I was lost for an idea, I let wikipedia tease ideas out of my strained brain. The last 4k words of Tattoo streamed out like an angry river. A flash flood of tactile visions that made me squirm in my chair. The main character brought me to a place I'd never even thought of. And. It. Just. Happened. No planning on my part. Just a tsunami of words, thoughts, and visions that tortured my fingers in a non-stop rampage of keystrokes. This is when writing is its most fun. When a story grabs me this way, it usually means it's going to end up being tight and good. Something at least I'll be proud of, even if people don't like it. So I look forward to recording it for you and putting out the pdf versions of the chapters (followed by the epub once it's complete). I believe it will take all of September and the begining of October to finish telling the tale. After that, "Necroshine" will drop on Halloween (at least that's the plan). I'll be putting out a promo for Tattoo this evening in the feed and begin making the email rounds. Please share. Please talk. And get excited. This is the best story yet. Cheers.

Killing The Fans

Character names are an amorphous art. Sometimes names jump into your mind without any real idea of where they came from. Some are ghosts that flit through your subconscious. Others are the result of knowing someone who had impact on your life, either for good or ill. Names, as Harry Dresden would say, have power. For someone to know your actual name, the real way you think of and pronounce it in your head, is for them to discover intricate portions of your personality. Writers often have full control over their characters. But, more often than not, characters define themselves as you go along through a story. Depends on how you write, of course. For me, names pop into my head without me really knowing where they come from. Tony Downs, for instance, is one of those instances of serendipity that I can't really explain. Daniel Keller. Roland Whithers. Jess. Jackson. These are all names that just dance into my mind without any real rhyme or reason. Now, Scott Sigler has a ritual. He likes to kill his Junkies. When you register on the forums, he even asks if you've died in one of his books or short stories. I've noticed that some junkies have been killed more than once. That's a pretty good schtick. I like it. So when twowire made a donation to my site, he said he expected to be killed in an upcoming story. He was kidding, of course. But I decided that would be pretty cool. Although, I'm going to do MUCH worse than kill him. You'll see. Twowire is going to be the first "experiment" in my endeavors to "thank" those who pimp my site and love my work. Therefore here are the rules. When you make a donation to ShadowPublications.com, your name is eligible for use in one of my tales. Either send an email to stories@shadowpublications.com or put in the payment notes that you would like your name to be used:
  • As a character name (non victim)
  • As a Fiend victim
  • As a street name or other location name
  • Fiend Name
If you don't specify that you would like to be in the stories, I promise not to sully your identity or associate you in any way with my work. The Fiends collection is really coming together. There are three stories under construction and those will be the last of the Fiends collection for a while. Therefore you have to commit pretty soon. Once Fiends is over, I'll move onto the Garaaga's Children collection and start all over again. And, of course, when Tony Downs rears his head again (at least 2 new short stories AND two novellas), the drive will continue. If I don't get enough donations, guess I'll just have to start nailing registered users on the site. But, my patrons come first. So there you go, people. Give me some bucks, and I'll immortalize you. Register on the site, and you'll have a chance to be immortalized. Questions, comments and concerns should be directed to stories@shadowpublications.com. And thanks to Brent Caudle and Pons Matal for kicking off the donations. Have a great friday. It's time for me to get back to "Tattoo" and do something nasty with Pons. Cheers.

The Joy Of Teaching

I was intent last night on getting the Fiends collection ready for the Kindle. Also planning my iPhone app, and writing at least 1k more on Tattoo. As usual, however, life got in the way. A friend of mother's is going to go teach at a university here in Texas. He was charged with teaching Java, which is my programming language of choice and what I've been doing for 12 years. He asked if I could come over to his house and walk him through real-world examples of how it's used, as well as help him through some of the rudimentary concepts of Object Oriented Programming. I stayed at his house until nearly 2245. While that shot my evening to hell and gone for getting anything done on Shadowpublications.com and my own programming projects, I had a blast. I have always enjoyed teaching, mentoring, and tutoring others. I helped many students in college improve their writing skills for essays. I helped them with history. I never charged for it, never even thought about it. It was just something I did.
